New England Hearth & Soapstone exhibiting masonry heater in DC

GOSHEN, CT - On November 15 -19, 2013 in Washington, DC, New England Hearth & Soapstone, LLC will be exhibiting the Intercontinental 2B4W masonry heater as a finalist in the Alliance for Green Heat’s Wood Stove Decathlon. The Decathlon will be held on the National Mall in Washington, DC. with various activities leading up to the judging which will take place on the final day of the event. Each of the fourteen finalist in the Wood Stove Design Challenge will be judged along with the other teams on the creativity and resources put into designing next generation wood stoves.

The Intercontinental 2B4W wood stove is a new type of masonry heater formed from two recycled steel oil barrels stacked on top of one another. The stove employs an efficient system of storing heat in its inner high density firebrick. By incorporating a computer automated control system and O2 (lamda) sensor into the Intercontinental 2B4W, the stove is designed to operate at 88% efficiency with additional ease of operations for the layman.

New England Hearth & Soapstone believes that all of these features follow the underlying goals of the Wood Stove Design Challenge. The criteria of the contest being the creation of cleaner, more efficient, more versatile - and harder to misuse wood stoves, which are affordable and appeal to the mass market.  This event is an effort to keep pace with innovations in solar, wind and geothermal renewable energy equipment and to spotlight clean wood heat as a viable option.

The leader of the Intercontinental 2B4W project in the US is Rod Zander, owner and operator of New England Hearth & Soapstone in Goshen, Connecticut. He is a master designer and builder known for meticulously engineered one-of-a-kind masonry heaters which are finished in a variety of materials; soapstone, stucco and brick, or tile (Kachelofen). Rod specializes in adapting traditional masonry heater construction methods to comply with modern building codes in the United States and meet rigorous European stove standards.

Blog post from ceramic magazine

New England Hearth & Soapstone (my company) in Connecticut USA designs and builds tile stoves, Kachelofen and masonry heaters. Our handmade heaters are found throughout the USA and Japan. We are member of the Kachelofenverband (tile stove association of Austria) and founding member of AMHOP (Alliance of Masonry Heaters and Oven Professionals). We have conducted numerous workshops on heater building and design. I have been trained by Austrian master builders as well as having learned from builders in Finland, German, Sweden, Canada and the USA. I build in the time proven fashion of traditional construction using clay mortars and no air gap. This allows the stove to be repaired or taken apart. It also provides more heat using less wood.
The interior construction of the stoves needs to be made of high duty fire brick for its ability to withstand the high temperatures and store heat. NEHS calculates and builds to the highest standards for high efficiency and low emissions.
A tiled stove is not made by placing bricks around a metal wood stove. It is a very complex process of design and construction. There are calculated relationships to the chimney draft, fire box size and the length and size of the heat exchange channels (flues). These are what make a tiled stove what it is.
We have designed and produce a modular masonry heater the Helios.

It is possible to purchase antique stove tiles and build it anew. Handmade tiles can be purchased from Jessica in Canada. Factory and handmade tiles can be found in Europe. Stove tile making is a highly specialized craft since the kachlen (stove tiles) are not the same as floor or wall tiles. There are modular kits available which are a simple version of a traditional handmade stove.

Personally I have heated my home for 30 years using 3-4 cords of firewood to heat 2500 sq. feet of a house built in the 1850's which we have updated and improved its insulation.
