The soapstone is... warm and lustrous, the touch silky and somehow soft. The overall effect is of substantial yet understated elegance."

The Beauty of Soapstone
What We Love About Soapstone
Of all the masonry materials available, we at New England Hearth & Soapstone are especially partial to soapstone, for several reasons. Its density, specific heat or capacity for heat storage, and thermal conductivity surpass those of slate, granite, brick or refractory brick; it stores heat fully twice as well as cast iron. (Old-fashioned bed warmers are made of soapstone because of its amazing properties of heat retention.) Soapstone is also non-porous and nonreactive with acids, making it particularly convenient for use in kitchens or similar environments; it has a long history of use in sinks and countertops in chemistry labs.
Soapstone will enhance your life with its natural and unexpected patterns. As soapstone ages, its beauty deepens as it develops a rich natural patina with no maintenance. Unlike many attractive but impractical counter surfaces, soapstone enhances the functionality of your kitchen. Its cool smooth surface is ideal for a multitude of kitchen tasks, including but not limited to a perfect surface for pastry making and a safe place to rest a hot dish.

Caring for Soapstone
Soapstone is easily maintained using natural mineral oils and gentle household cleaners. Soapstone has long been a tradition in laboratories as it is impervious to acids, stains, and heat. It is the only non-porous stone, giving it the surface which marble and granite imitate with sealers. Over time the stone will darken naturally but it may be darkened with linseed oil, a natural, food grade oil. This will also increase the shine of the stone. We continuously monitor soapstone from quarries around the world. We select only the highest caliber for our collection of premier quality soapstone, ensuring the superior durability of our counters.
